Sip your Way Through the South Burnett Wine Trail

on 23 September 2021 in Food & Drink

Being in the highlands means impeccable grape growing weather, exquisite flavours and even better wine. Explore the South Burnett Wine Trail like never before.

If you’re the kind of person who knows how to enjoy top quality sips of fine local wine, culinary local delights backed by spectacular scenery, the South Burnett Wine Trail is a match made in heaven.

Renowned for being Queensland’s newest and largest wine region, the wineries in the South Burnett Region have already won several awards both National and State, with wines so good they’ve been applauded at home and overseas.

It’s time to dip your taste buds into a tantalising journey through the South Burnett Wine Trail.

A reasonable 200 kilometres from Brisbane or 150 kilometres from Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba, the trail is perfect for a short stay (especially if you’re looking to embrace the best of the wineries and have a taste).

The region boasts an array of boutique wineries that are mostly family owned, with the dedication to create artisan wines that are unique, bold, and bursting in flavours that will make your mind blow. Complement these beauties with local fresh produce, and you’ll quickly learn to fall in love with an explosion combination made to impress.

In the northern area of the South Burnett Wine Trail, you’ll find Clovely Estate (Queensland’s biggest vineyard), Barambah Cellars, Moffatdale Ridge and Dusty Hill. In the southern area of Kingaroy, you’ll find the famous Crane Wines, Kingsley Grove Estate, and the Pottique Lavender Farm (which is open to the public only on weekends).

The acclaimed varieties from this region include Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sangiovese and Verdelho – offering a good range of flavour to wine connoisseurs and appreciators. These wines have made their mark in Queensland State Parliament dinners as well as many leading restaurants all over the country. With huge demand comes the desire for exports to Asia and other countries.

A step inside the wineries and cellar doors offer a wine tasting experience you won’t forget. With passion that fills the air, you’ll quickly discover that cellar door staff are knowledgeable in their trade and eager to meet your tasting demands. Beyond wines, some cellars offer additional drinks such as South Burnett Port, Liqueur and sparkling wine.

Add in some local cheese, fresh olives and capers, and savour the best of the South Burnett Wine Trail. You’ll also be thrilled to know that some wineries produce their own olive oil and often will offer a taste of that too.

Drop by the Moffatdale Ridge Winery when at the northern end of the South Burnett Wine Trail for a unique Tuscan experience. Home to a Tuscan inspired restaurant that hosts a Tuscan Feast lunch every last Saturday of the month, it’s an experience not to be missed especially when paired wonderfully with their award-winning wines.

For stunning views of Barambah Lake, head to Dusty Hill Vineyard, where you can also enjoy a hearty meal paired with handcrafted wine from the Prendergast Irish Tavern.

When closer to Kingaroy, a visit to the Kingsley Grove Estate Wines will not disappoint. Beyond tasting award wines of both traditional and innovative varieties, the magic lies in their wood fired pizzas served during weekends. Book a tour in advance to not miss out on the opportunity of pairing delicious wine with mouth watering pizzas.

Another winery close to Kingaroy is the Crane Winery, winner of astounding impressions thanks to its colonial homestead perched high atop the Booie Range. Breathtaking scenery awaits you as you soak in the views of the East and Bunya Mountains.

When in Kingaroy, be sure to head to TASTE South Burnett in the heart of Kingaroy and grab yourself a hamper that includes the best combination of local produce, snacks including peanuts, wine, and even TASTE’s homemade fudge.
